Salt Lake City welcomes you to experience their state-of-the-art performing arts venues, catch a basketball game to cheer on the Utah Jazz and grab some refreshments afterward at the local distilleries and breweries. People can stroll down some of the cleanest and safest streets in the nation to soak up the culture. Clean streets or dirty; cockroaches are in your city and on the hunt for moisture and food. No building is safe once they find what they need.

Three Common Cockroaches In Salt Lake City

Homes and businesses have a common invader: the dreaded cockroach. All cockroaches have flattened bodies and heads with elongated, spiny legs. Most cockroaches have long, thin antennae that help them find food and feel their way. Many of them have wings that some species use for short, quick flights.

Common cockroaches found in the Salt Lake City area include:

  • German Cockroach: Found worldwide, this is the most plenteous indoor cockroach. Adults are ½ to 5/8 inches long and are light brown with two dark stripes on their back. When indoors, they frequently reside in basements and bathrooms. A favorite spot for them to camp out is where people eat, such as a kitchen, especially near dishwashers, stoves, sinks, and garbage.
  • Oriental Cockroach: This cockroach, also called a water bug, likes damp, dark, cool spaces. It grows to about 1¼ inches long and has a shiny black to dark reddish-brown color. When indoors, they will seek out damp and cool places to hide. Some preferred hiding spots are under sinks, under washing machines, and in moist basements.
  • American Cockroach: This cockroach is the largest of all house-infesting roaches. They are a significant pest throughout the United States, especially in commercial facilities. They average around 1 1/2 inches in length, but it can exceed two inches. They are reddish-brown with a yellow band that outlines the area behind their head. When indoors, they can be found in warm, moist places in basements, crawl spaces, and in and around bathtubs, clothes hampers, floor drains, pipe chases, and sewers.
No matter which type of cockroach finds its way into your Salt Lake City home or business, it's bad news.

Little-Known Facts About Cockroaches

Many have the false assumption that cockroaches only turn up in buildings with poor hygiene and poor housekeeping. A dirty building will indeed provide the cockroach with more things that they love, but the reality is that anyone can have a cockroach infestation problem. Cockroaches can survive a month without food and a week without water; even "clean" buildings can be just what they need to live and thrive.

Cockroaches can make their way into buildings using the following:

  • Boxes
  • Grocery bags
  • Suitcases
  • Furniture
  • Sewers
  • Doors
  • Basement windows
  • Garages

With so many ways to enter your home, it is important to be on the lookout for signs of invading cockroaches.
